Religious and Secular Warnings on Marriage

In 1995 the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints published, “TheFamily: A Proclamation to the World” affirming the central role of the family on earth as intended by our Creator.  The proclamation concludes with these words:
"We…warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.

"We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society."
Yesterday, the Heritage Foundation published an article entitled, “A Double Decline of Marriage and Religiosity: Why Does It Matter” providing empirical details of many “calamities”, natural social consequences of broken families, currently impacting individuals, communities and our nation as a whole:
"Brad Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project, has shown that family dissolution is linked to a further erosion of civil society…

"The impact of the downturns in family formation and religious practice have real-world and long-term implications for the lives of Americans—particularly the rising generation…

"Given the wide-ranging and mutually supporting benefits of religion and family, it is critical for the public interest to bolster both—and a starting point would be to support policies that promote marriage and strengthen families."
See full article for specific details.

Unfortunately, the government is not heeding the religious proclamation of the LDS Church and similar warnings from other religious institutions, and they are ignoring the mountain of social evidence that has been building for decades showing the positive impact of traditional families and negative consequences of broken families.  Their politically correct policies are not strengthening the institution of marriage or families – quite the opposite.   The results speak for themselves.
